Industrial hygiene involves the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards in the workplace. Recognition is achieved through conducting a visual hazard assessment of the work area, processes, and potential chemicals of concern. Evaluation is the combined information gathered through the hazard assessment and personnel exposure monitoring and testing. Hazards are generally controlled through the use of engineering controls, administrative controls, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
